How VEREGEN® (sinecatechins) Ointment, 15% Works and What to Expect
It has not yet been proven precisely how VEREGEN® works to successfully treat EGWs. However, studies have shown that the main ingredient—an extract taken from green tea leaves—has antioxidative properties.
Here are answers to some of the questions you may have about what to expect with VEREGEN® treatment.
Will VEREGEN® work for me?
VEREGEN® has been clinically proven to help clear up EGWs. In two clinical studies, most people (53.6%) who applied VEREGEN® 3 times a day for up to 16 weeks had complete clearance of EGWs. In these studies, treatment continued for 16 weeks or less, depending on how quickly the EGWs cleared.
Will the warts come back?
In the clinical studies described above, people who used VEREGEN® and had complete clearance of warts were re-checked 12 weeks after their treatment ended. More than 90% of these people had no recurrence of warts at that time.
(Remember: HPV can stay in the body for weeks or months without symptoms so warts could come back in the future.)
Will I have side effects?
Some people may experience redness, swelling, sores, blisters, burning, itching or pain while using VEREGEN®. These side effects usually go away or lessen in intensity within 2 weeks. Very few people in the clinical studies stopped using VEREGEN® because of side effects. Be sure to tell your doctor if you get any more severe side effects.
Can I be sexually active while using VEREGEN®?
VEREGEN® does not prevent the transfer of HPV. You need to be very careful, but it is possible to have protected sex using a condom for vaginal, anal and oral sex. Be sure to wash off all the ointment with warm soap and water beforehand. Avoid sexual contact when VEREGEN® is on your skin. After sex, wash your hands and the treatment area, then reapply VEREGEN®.
Can VEREGEN® affect certain contraceptives?
The use of VEREGEN® may weaken condoms and vaginal diaphragms. Be sure to wash all of the ointment off with warm soap and water before using either of these options.
VEREGEN® is indicated for the topical treatment of external genital and perianal warts (Condylomata acuminata) in patients 18 years and older.
